White Sands National Monument lies in the Tularosa Basin at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert. The white gypsum sand covers 275 square miles of the desert, the largest gypsum dune field in the world. The dune field lies between the San Andres Mountains to the west and the Sacramento Mountains to the east. The prevailing winds push the dunes towards the northeast.
